Diversifying Academia: A Workshop for Female Master’s Students in Nigeria Interested in the Ph.D.

Deadline: February 7, 2020

Date: March 16 to 17, 2020

Venue: University of Ibadan

With funding from the Columbia University Collaborative to Advance Equity Through Research (http://wgssc.columbia.edu/she-rises), the organizers (Dr. Abosede George, Dr. Mutiat Oladejo, and Halimat Somotan) are pleased to announce a two-day workshop that will prepare female masters students to apply for competitive doctoral programs and pursue original research. The workshop will be held at the University of Ibadan (UI) from March 16 to 17 2020. The goal of the event is to contribute to the diversification of the academy by creating a forum for women to develop strategies for combating systemic issues that might deter them from applying to doctoral programs.

We invite applications from female master’s students in any field from the University of Ibadan, University of Lagos, and Obafemi Awolowo University. At the workshop, female junior and senior scholars will share their experiences, brainstorm solutions to the everyday struggles that women encounter in obtaining doctoral degrees in Nigeria and abroad. Participants will learn about the tools that faculty members used to navigate their programs, discuss work-life balance techniques, and workshop drafts of their statements and research proposals for admission into Ph.D. programs. Hotel accommodation, meals, and transportation funds will be provided for participants coming from outside Ibadan.

The application requires a 250-500 words statement of interest that explains your motivations and goals. Please submit your application here by February 7th: https://docs.google.com/…/1UwE9q4GYz8myvNMEJJxP_GEtkMH…/edit
